I am grateful for the opportunities given to me in this class to improve my knowledge of myself and to improve my application and job aspirations. Throughout the last five weeks, I have enhanced my knowledge of the parts of an application greatly by learning how to best present myself to my employer.
I have also learned more about myself than I thought I wanted to know. (As it turns out, I quite enjoyed learning more about myself.) Through Waybook, I also learned what jobs and careers might interest me by looking more closely at what interests me and what my personality is. My idea of myself shifted from thinking I had no direction or sole interest to finding that as long as I am learning, I am happy. This will definitely come in handy later in life when I am applying for jobs, or find myself in a rut at work. I now know I can turn toward learning to improve my experience almost anywhere. In addition to Waybook, I learned about myself through evaluating my career readiness skills. I am very grateful to have learned what most employers look for, and to know that I have a good handle on most, if not all, of the skills.
Most of all, I am grateful for the opportunity to have worked in a professional lab environment in a low risk position that gave me the chance to practice what I have learned in class. This was probably a once in a lifetime opportunity and I am thankful that I got to have it with enough support to get me through it and make sure I did well at the actual internship. This allowed me to get the most possible out of the internship.
I agree that in class, you never really get the opportunity to use the skills and concepts you learn. That's why an internship is so beneficial. You get to practice everything you have learned, and get a feel for the field you would like to enter. At my internship, I was able to write blogs and radio stories. My English teacher has always talked about writing when you are older for newspapers, websites, and shows. At my internship at EarthScope, I was able to use my writing skills for real world purposes. I also agree that it is nice to know if you mess up, it is not the end of the world. I found that if I was confident in my work, my internship supervisor did respect me. All in all, I would recommend doing a internship to any high school student. It can be a great experience.
ReplyDeleteLearning about yourself is great and can actually be really fun. To answer the question "Who are you?," is so hard. We are teenagers and most of us don't know who we are yet. We grow everyday. I am glad your internship was such a great experience for you. I am also glad to read that "When you are learning you are happy." The world needs more curious people like you. Good work and have a great rest of your summer!
ReplyDeleteI completely agree. Learning your own motivations and values is extremely important to being successful later in life. Its really incredible that you have such a strong passion for learning, and it will lead to many successes later in life. I'm sure that you will be hired at any job you apply to!!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree that this class has helped us with applications. Not only what to include, but also what we need to work on for ourselves to be a strong candidate for any position. I think this class, combined with the internships, changed a lot of our opinions away from the certain career we were considering. I guess it's better that it occurred now BEFORE we go to college, but still slightly sad to let my life long dream become something else.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you! This class has basically opened my eyes to the harsh reality of bow low the pay are for the jobs I was looking.
